Matthäus: “James whines that he’s not playing enough”
Bayern Munich legends rips into the Madrid loanee and others after Bayern’s poor start to the season
Real Madrid loanee, James Rodriguez, has had an up and down career with Bayern Munich and their indifferent start to the season has received backlash from all angles. The latest to criticize the Bavarians was former Bayern Munich player Lothar Matthaus:
“There are too many one-man companies at Bayern. Too many players who only think of themselves. Players like James and Lewandowski put themselves above the club; Robben and Ribery too. The one whines that he’s not playing enough, the other that he doesn’t get enough balls, and the third one curses when he gets subbed off or goes crying to journalist. Some stars act egotistically and disrespectfully to the coach, the club, and teammates. Just because Kovac doesn’t put his arm around him (James) as often as Heyneckes did, doesn’t mean he can react so furiously.”
Kiyan Sobhani and I discussed James situation on this week’s Loan Tracker Podcast. Just a mere two weeks ago, James looked set to sign permanently for Bayern Munich. The recent bout of criticism and dreary atmosphere surrounding the club may mean a return to Madrid could still be on the cards. James has featured sparingly for new coach Niko Kovac despite playing well and scoring goals when he has been on the pitch. “James is a player of extraordinary quality and is important for the club. He’s proved that several times, but I can’t play with 12 men. He will play as many games as others” Kovac said in his last pre-game press conference.
James now finds himself in a situation eerily similar to that of Madrid when Zidane was in charge. Julen Lopetegui, whose own future is in doubt, is reported to be an admirer of the Colombian talent and wanted him to form part of the squad this season. There are still many twists and turns remaining in this season, but a James return to Madrid could potentially be on the cards if Bayern’s form and James attitude continue to suffer.
